Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

Makenai is a Japanese SRS (spaced repetition) app operated by an independent developer ("we", "us"), who is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. If you have questions about this policy, contact us at support@usemakenai.com.

2. What we collect

Guest mode. You can use Makenai without an account. In guest mode your study progress and settings stay on your device, and the only data that leaves it is the crash and diagnostic data described below. On iOS, guest mode is currently the only way to use the app.

If you create an account or use certain features, we collect the minimum needed to operate the service:

• Account data: if you sign in with Google (Android), we receive your email address, name and a Google account identifier from Google. If you register with email, we store your email address, display name and a securely hashed password.
• SRS progress (signed-in users only): review logs, item stages and settings, synced to our servers so you can restore them on another device.
• Crash and diagnostic data: when the app crashes or hits an error, and for a small sample of sessions, we receive technical reports through Sentry: stack traces, performance timings, device model, operating system version and app version. We do not attach your name or email to these reports and we configure Sentry not to store IP addresses.
• Support messages: the message you send through the in-app Help form (signed-in users), together with your email, app version and a device identifier (iOS identifierForVendor or Android ID). We use the identifier to investigate your issue and to limit the form to one message per device per day to prevent spam.
• Connection data: when the app contacts our servers, our hosting and network providers process your IP address and basic request details for security and abuse prevention. These are kept only in short-lived server logs.

What we do not collect: location, contacts, photos, microphone or voice recordings, browsing history or advertising identifiers. Makenai shows no ads and does not track you across other companies' apps or websites.

Payments: Makenai is currently free and has no in-app purchases. If paid features are introduced, purchases will be processed by Apple or Google under their terms, and we will never receive your payment card details.

3. How we use it

• Provide your account, sign-in and progress sync (to perform our agreement with you).
• Send account emails such as verification codes and password resets (to perform our agreement with you).
• Diagnose crashes and improve stability (our legitimate interest in a working app).
• Respond to support requests (to perform our agreement with you).
• Keep the service secure and prevent abuse, fraud and spam, for example with rate limits (our legitimate interest and legal obligations).

We do not sell your personal data, share it for targeted advertising, or use it for profiling or automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you.

4. Third-party services

We use the following service providers, each bound by its own data protection terms:

Some of these providers process data outside your country, including in the United States. Where the law requires it, these transfers are covered by safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.

5. Data retention and deletion

• Account and sync data are kept until you delete your account.
• Crash and diagnostic reports are kept by Sentry for up to 90 days.
• Support messages are kept so we can handle your request. They are not removed automatically when you delete your account; email us and we will delete them.
• Guest data lives only on your device and is removed when you uninstall the app.

If you have an account, you can permanently delete it, together with your synced progress, directly from the app:

Deletion is immediate and irreversible. Progress stored locally on your device is not affected until you uninstall the app.

6. Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EU and UK, or the CCPA in California), you may have the right to access, correct, delete or export your personal data, to object to or restrict its processing, and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise these rights, email support@usemakenai.com or use the in-app deletion flow above. We respond within 30 days and may need to verify that the request comes from you. We will not treat you differently for exercising your rights.

Makenai is operated from the Philippines and handles personal data in line with the Data Privacy Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 10173). You have the right to lodge a complaint with the National Privacy Commission of the Philippines, or, if you are in the EU or UK, with your local data protection authority.

7. Children

Makenai's study content is suitable for all ages, but accounts are not intended for children under 13, or under the minimum age for digital consent in their country, without a parent's consent. Guest mode does not ask for any personal information. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children; if you believe a child has given us their data, contact us and we will delete it promptly.

8. Security

Data sent between the app and our servers is encrypted with HTTPS, and sign-in tokens are stored in your device's secure storage (iOS Keychain or Android Keystore). No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your data and will notify you of a breach where the law requires it.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The effective date at the top of the page shows when it was last revised. If we make material changes, we will let you know in the app or by email before they take effect.
